The name Newmar comes from the company’s two founders: Marvin Newcomer and Marvin Miller, who left vice-president-level jobs at another RV manufacturer with the idea of doing things better. In 1968, the pair set up their first production facility in an old fire house in rural Indiana, about 12 miles from their current location in Nappanee.

Their main product during the early years was the Kountry Aire travel trailer. As RV enthusiasts in the early 1970’s learned about the benefits of towing a fifth-wheel trailer, Newmar was quick to develop one of the first and most popular fifth-wheels in the industry. It was also called the Kountry Aire, and still at the top of Newmar’s fifth-wheel model line-up today. In the 1980’s, Newmar expanded to build Class A motorhomes, and has been very successful with a variety of models.

The company was founded and has always been owned by Mennonites in a community that is rich with hardworking and talented individuals. In 1984, Mahlon Miller joined the company and became chairman of the board, eventually buying out his partners to become sole owner. From six people in 1968, the company has grown to employ more than 1,000. In 1995, Newmar moved into a new, 116,000 square-foot manufacturing facility considered by many to be one of the most state-of-the-art in the RV industry. In 2003, a 21,000 sq.-ft. addition was added to this facility to accommodate changes in its products. Today, Newmar makes three lines of fifth-wheel trailers and 11 gas and diesel Class A motorhome models, including the unique All-Star Mid-Engine Diesel with the choice between two-story accommodations in the rear of the coach, a rear super storage area, a roomy toy-hauler garage or a cycle hauler with rear slide-out equipped with a ramp.
